Abstract

Slip of the ear is a kind of error of listener in perceiving speech which is usually found in daily life. The aims of this study are to identify the types of slips of the ear and to find out the most frequent types of slips of the ear experienced by 30 children at the age of 4, 5, and 6 years old in PAUD Yayasan RSU Dr. Soetomo in noisy situation. The writer used Indonesian audio recording played in noisy environment. This study used pre experimental design to investigate the occurrence slips of the ear. By using Bond’s classification (2005) on slips of the ear, the results showed that there are 14 types of slips of the ear occurred in 311 data collected in noisy situation. They are vowel misperceptions, consonant misperceptions, segment order, phonological reduction, phonological well-formedness, language varieties, non-word misperception, word boundaries, content and function word, morphological misperception, well-formed and ill-formed utterances, constituents, argument structure and function, and semantical misperception. The most dominant type of slips of the ear belongs to the consonant misperception type with the percentage of 28.6 %. It is shown that listeners might use all linguistic knowledges in perceiving the utterances.
