Abstract

This study used a qualitative approach in discovering the representation of male and female language in the script of the film Beauty and the Beast. This study was conducted since male and female character present different linguistic features in the script and the differences can cause different interpretation of gender. In the script, the differences can be seen through the words used, the phrases, the sentences, the details put among them, and even the arrangement of the ideas. Specifically, this study analyzed the differences and the similarities, also discovering how male and female characters are represented in the script. The analysis only focused on words and phrases used by the main male and the main female character in their dialogues. The result shows that both of the male and female character does differ in their linguistic features. The differences can be shown in the use of word choices and phrases. In the term of word classes, the male character tends to use noun, verb, adverb and adjectives; while the female character tends to use noun, verb, adjectives and adverb. In the term of phrases using, the result shows that both of them tend to use more noun phrases and verb phrases more than adjectives phrases, adverb phrases and prepositional phrases. Based on the result, it can lead to different interpretation of different gender.
