Abstract

Lelaki Harimau is one of the few works of Indonesian literature translated into English under the title Man Tiger which is worth researching. The significant characteristic of this novel is the occurrence of numerous murder and sexual scenes. Therefore, this study is aimed at investigating the translation of taboo words from Indonesian into English. A qualitative approach was embodied to analyze the data that were identified by using the taboo categorization by Allan and Burridge (2006). Then, the framework proposed by Baker (1992) was further employed to examine the translation strategies in translating the taboo words. The results reveal that out of 271 data, the most prevalent category of taboo recognized in this study is disease, death, and killing which constitutes 66.79% of the total data. The other identified categories namely organs and acts of sex, micturition, and defecation; naming, addressing, touching, and viewing persons and scared beings, objects, and places; and bodies and their effluvia cover as many as 17.34%, 14.39%, and 1.48% of the data sequentially. In each category found, translation by direct equivalent appears as the prominent translation strategy in which 66.05% of the data belong to this strategy. Henceforth, there is no significant censoring of language applied in the translation since most of the taboo words are retained as taboo. Based on the findings, it could be pinpointed that there is a breaking of taboo in the translation, influenced by the assumption that it is driven by the peculiar characteristic of literary translation to maintain the aesthetical points of the original work.
