Abstract

Swear words are always stigmatized negatively by the society. They are often used by people to express their emotions, especially anger or even frustration. The use of swear words have shifted from negative things into being accepted to be used depend on social factors. This study focuses on the use of swear words uttered by United Army members during derby match in the nobar event. It is found that there is a relevancy of swear words with derby match attended by United Army, because United Army do a lot swearing to express their emotions during derby match in scoring moments. The purpose of this study are to find out and reveal what types and functions of swear words that uttered by United Army. By using the qualitative approach, the writer used natural settings. The data were collected by secretly recorded using recorder. This study has 28 data. To analyze the data, the writer will use ten types of swear words proposed by Timothy and four functions of swear words by Anderson & Trudgill. The results shows that out of ten types of swear words proposed by Timothy, six types occur. Blasphemy, profanity, slang, and slur are absent in this study. For functions of swear words proposed by Anderson & Trudgill only three occur; expletive, abusive, and auxiliary
