Abstract

Beauty is a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight. women becomes the victim of our society by how their beauty looks like. Media creates a standard of beauty in society and becomes an absolute assumption. Since media become absolute assumption, society has the perception that woman is beautiful when they have white skin,slim body, sharp nose, etc. In fact, there is no absolute beauty. Beauty pageant is one of many product created by media. The idea can be seen through the representation of beauty in Pretty Hurts music video. The purpose of the study is to examine the representation of beauty in Pretty Hurts music video. As the object, Pretty Hurts music video uses the approach of television culture by John Fiske in the qualitative method and find 6 pictures as the primary data. These scenes are analyzed by using beauty myth theory written by Naomi Wolf to find the representation of beauty in Pretty Hurts music video. It shows that women are still following the beauty concept to be accepted in patriarchal society. The beauty concept itself becomes the weapon to make women weakened and powerless.
