Abstract

This study focused on analyzing women’s linguistic features used by female characters in Cinderella movie (2015). According to Lakoff’s theory there are ten characteristics of woman language; they are hedges or fillers, tag question, rising intonation on declaratives, empty adjectives, intensifiers and avoidance of strong swear, precise color term, hypercorrect grammar, and superpolite. The writer uses Lakoff theory in this study. Descriptive qualitative method is used in this study because it does not involve numeric data. The data were collected by the utterances of the female characters in this movie. the characters are only Cinderella, Stepmother, and Cinderella’s Stepsisters: Anastasia and Drisella. Then, the writer identified each feature in the dialogue and analyzed it using Lakoff’s theory. The finding shows that there are nine women’s linguistic feature that appear including lexical hedges or fillers, tag question, rising intonation on declaratives, ‘empty’ adjectives, intensifiers, ‘hypercorrect’ grammar, ‘superpolite’ form, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress while the absent feature is precise color term. The highest frequency of occurences is lexical hedges or fillers. The use of lexical hedges or fillers which are most frequently found in the female main character of the film. It is closely connected to tentativeness, it indicates that female characters in the movie are less confidence in delivering their utterance.
