Abstract

The binary construction of gender as man and woman are allegedly known to give more privilege to the heterosexual people. As the opposite, those who are having another gender out of what the heteronormative society taught will be potentially considered as other. In addition, the mainstream media portrayal of queer is still far from justice as they use the heteronormative approach which often put queer people as marginalized and portrays them as negative. The theory of Queer from Anna Marie Jagose classified non-heterosexual gender in the heteronormative society as queer. This theory supports the mismatches between the given biological sex and the socio-constructed gender. Derives from this problem, the act of advocacyis highly needed for queer people to maintain their queer gender in order to come out in the heteronormative society. A music video which brings the issue of advocacy for queer people is We Exist from Arcade Fire (2014) music video, therefore, this research is aimed to examine the representation of queer advocacy in this music video. Semiotic Codes of Television was used to analyze the selected shots related to the queer advocacy and qualitative approach was used as the approach since it reviews the social phenomena. In the music video, the transgender character is known for facing the incapability to come out by itself in the heteronormative society. The queer advocacy involving cross-dressers and ally in the music video was the key for the transgender character to really come out in the heteronormative society after trapped in isolation even though only in her imagination and in the set environment of a concert.
