Abstract

Background: Midwives have an enormous role in the normal physiological process of birth and have a philosophy that believes in pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period are physiological process and only a few require medical intervention. Labour in working area of Puskesmas Gandusari at 2017 until September was 302, with 190 labour (63%) take place at hospital, 110 with sectio caesarean, and 27 with induction and vacum. Midwives’ perception of the normality concept in labour is one of the internal factors than can influence the care they provided. So the aim of this study is to know the perception of midwife about normality concept in labour and their application for the care they provided. Method: a qualitative study with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach was selected for data collection, and the data presented are drived from indepth interviews and covert observation. Seven midwives with inclussion criteria participated in this study. The inclussion criteria are serving in the working area of Puskesmas Gandusari, having BPM or serving in Polindes / Ponkesdes (midwivery led care), has worked as a midwife at least 10 years, provide childbirth care service. Result: midwives assume labor to be a risky process, and more anticipate pathology than physiology. The primary goal of midwives in help the delivery process is maternal and infant safety, and some interventions are considered necessary to avoid risk. Midwives are more applying biomedical models in giving birth care. Conclusion: midwives' perceptions of the normality concept of labor affect the given care model.
