Abstract

Background: Based on Teluk Bintuni General Hospital Annual Reports, it was stated that HIV/AIDS prevalence in productive age showed steady rise for the past 3 years. HIV/AIDS cases at pregnant mothers showed similar rise as stated in 2014 there were 4 cases out of 28 and increasing in 2016 with 14 cases out of 45. In 2018, 85% of pregnant women have conducted HIV/AIDS screening during antenatal visit. Infected infants reached HIV 90% rate during pregnancy, labor and breastfeeding.Aimed to identify relationship between knowledge and HIV-AIDS screening needs among pregnant mothers. Method: This research was an observational analytical study with cross sectional approach. There were 106 mothers who visited at March 6th 2018 until April 6th 2018 taken as samples using conveniecet sampling technique, was collected using structured questionnaire and analyzed using Spearman Rank Correlation Test. Results: The results showed most pregnant mothers who were poorly educated (68,8%), had negative attitude toward HIV/AIDS screening needs (54,8%). While most pregnant mothers with adequate knowledge (54,8%) had positive attitude toward HIV/AIDS screening needs. And almost all mothers who had good knowledge showed positive attitude toward the needs to do HIV/AIDS screening (87,5%). Spearman Rank Correlation test resulted significant relation between knowledge and HIV/AIDS screening needs among pregnant mothers. Conclusion: Knowledge was an important factor which could influence individuals to do HIV/AIDS screening.. HIV/AIDS screening could detect HIV infection as early as possible in order to avoid further transmission into fetus and lower Mother and Infant mortality rate.
