Abstract

Introduction: Fall is the global major problem in geriatrics as it causes physical and physicological impairment, social isolation, and even leads to mortality. Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) is the relevant screening method which is commonly used in medical practice as a standard examination to assess mobility, balance, gait analysis, and fall risk. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the correlation between history of falls and TUG in geriatric patients at the Geriatric Center of General Hospital Dr. Soetomo Surabaya, Indonesia for the period time of 2017 to 2018. Material and methods: This research study was cross sectional analytic descriptive design with retrospective observational approach. The number of subjects were 73 with the criteria ≥ 60 years old, MMSE (Mini Mental State Examination) score ≥ 17, did not suffer from hemiplegic stroke, and did not use walking aids. The subjects with these criteria were interviewed to know the gender, age, fall history from the past 12 months, level of education, and comorbidity. Then the subjects carried out an MMSE assessment, Body Mass Index (BMI) measurement, and TUG assessment. Statistical analysis was done with Fisher exact test. P value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: There was significant correlation between history of falls and TUG (p=0.048) with the contingency coefficient 0.305. Conclusion: There was weak correlation between history of falls and TUG. Subsequent studies need to add and select samples with a uniform distribution of characteristics, so the results obtained can represent the entire elderly population at the Geriatric Center of General Hospital Dr. Soetomo Surabaya, Indonesia.
