Abstract

English, as a global language, is also used in Indonesia in many aspects. It is used in economic, business, tourism, and even education. In education, English is used as a subject, an extra-curricular program, and even as a medium of communication. In the place where the writer did internship, Luveta Primary School, English is used as a subject and medium of communication. During the internship, the writer taught English for first grade and third grade students. Indeed, the writer found challenges and problems during the teaching process. The biggest problem the writer faced was spelling mistakes done by the first grade students. Therefore, the writer tried to find out more about types of spelling mistakes and strategies to deal with the spelling mistakes. To find out the types of spelling mistakes, the writer searched literatures about spelling mistakes. After that, the writer searched strategies to deal with spelling mistakes and applied the strategies into a sequence of strategies to the first grade students. The writer did some spelling tests to find out the types of spelling mistakes and to find out the effectiveness of the strategies. From the test, the writer found types of spelling mistakes: submission, insertion, omission, transposition, and combination-type. Moreover, from applying the sequence of strategies, the spelling mistakes were decreasing in week after week. In this paper, the writer explains and elaborates about spelling mistakes.
