Smartphones are mobile phones that have an operating system in them which has the capabilities of a mini computer and has many features that can help human needs. Currently the smartphone has various uses for employee work. The focus of this research is the function of smartphones on the performance of employees at health centers of Airlangga University. This research was conducted on the employees at the health service center of Airlangga University on September 11, 2017. The theory used in this research is the theory of functionalism Bronislaw Malinowski (Koentjaraningrat 1980) about culture, that is, everything done in a culture is in fact in order to satisfy a series of human needs as a living being, be it intrumental and also integrative needs. The research method is qualitative, which produce descriptive data, collecting data by participant observation and interview to informant and research subject and supported by result of researcher documentation. The result of this thesis writing, researchers can explain the function of smartphones in health care center environment of Airlangga University, through two strata in culture according to malinowski namely instrumetal function, and integrative function. which can be explained the functionality and usability of the smartphone and what features are used in its use by employees at Airlangga University PLK.
