Abstract

Background : The rate of frequency of congenital deafness in some countries ranges from 1-3/1000 births. Based on data from R&D Department of the Ministry of Health, there are 9 provinces in Indonesia with prevalence of hearing loss in people who are more than 5 years old, exceed the national grade (2.6%), they are Yogyakarta, West Sulawesi, East Java, North Sumatra, South Sulawesi, Central Java, Lampung and NTT. Objective : To determine the intervention of deafness disorders in patients with congenital deafness at Neurotology Department of RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya in 2015-2017. Methods : This is a descriptive method with a cross-sectional design to determine the percentage and pattern of intervention of congenital deaf patients according by evaluating medical record. Result: There were 44 patient data analyzed in 2015-2017. The most group in congenital deaf screening were at the age of more than or equal to 60 month as many as 12 patients (27.3%) and the least group at the age of less than 12 month as many as 2 patients (4.5%). The most group who underwent intervention were patients who underwent speech therapy as many as 22 patients (50%) and the least were cochlear implant users as many as 2 patient (4.5%). And, the most group from the intervention of speech therapy was in the age group of more than 60 month as many as 16 patients (36.4%) and the lowest group at the age of 12-24 months is the same as the 48-60 month age group, which is 4 patients (9.1%). Conclusion : There is still a lot of delay in screening in cases of congenital deafness, this is due to the late awareness of parents regarding the investigation of the child so that the intervention will start too late. And intervention in the form of hearing aids or cochlear implants cannot be performed on all patients due to the relatively high cost and the absence of government assistance for the use of hearing aids and the use of cochlear implants.
