Abstract

Flowable bulk-fill composite resin was chosen to meet restoration requirements in shortening working time and simplifying manipulation while maintaining a good degree of conversion thereby reducing shrinkage during polymerization. The biggest advantage of flowable bulk-flil composite resins is that they allow applications with a cavity depth of up to 4 mm. This composite resin has good mechanical properties, one of which can be seen from the surface hardness. Bleaching with the at home technique has been chosen by many people because of its relatively cheap price and easy application to improve dental aesthetics. Purpose: To analyse the difference of surface hardness of flowable bulk-fill composite resin after being soaked in home bleaching agents, hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. Methods: Flowable bulk-fill composite resin samples made with teflon mold measuring 5 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick soaked in artificial saliva for 60 minutes were then immersed in the home bleaching agents, hydrogen peroxide for 20 minutes and carbamide peroxide for 120 minutes. Surface hardness of flowable bulk-fill composite resin was measured using the Vickers Hardness Tester. Result: The lowest average value of surface hardness was flowable bulk-fill composite resin group which was soaked in hydrogen peroxide home bleaching agent for 20 minutes (29.40 VHN) and the highest was flowable bulk-fill composite resin group without treatment (32.90 VHN). There were significant differences in the surface hardness of flowable bulk-fill composite resin without treatment and soaked with home bleaching agent hydrogen peroxide (p <0.05). Conclusion: The application of a home bleaching agent using hydrogen peroxide can reduce the surface hardness of flowable bulk-fill composite resin
