Abstract

Jakarta gubernatorial election held in 2017 was a big moment in Indonesian democracy. It was highlighted by many medias, one of them is The Washington Post. Nevertheless, the research related to the language used by the media in reporting this election had not been conducted yet. Therefore, this study intended to analyze the ideology used by the Washington Post online towards Indonesian democracy in their report of Jakarta’s gubernatorial election 2017. It was analyzed using critical discourse analysis proposed by van Dijk (1993) and conducted using qualitative method. The data was taken from the official website of The Washington Post online to ensure its credibility. It then analyzed through van Dijk’s three structures analysis. The first structure was textual analysis, it consisted of macro structure, super structure, and micro structure. The second structure was social cognition analysis that involved the schemes of the journalist in writing the news. The third structure was social context analysis dealing with how acess can affect power. The result of the study is as follows: from the textual analysis, the Washington Post represented Indonesian democracy as intolerant, threatened by the violent acts, and filled with rigid people. In social cognition analysis, the journalist’s person-scheme and self- schemes influenced his viewpoint in portraying the intolerance condition in Indonesia. For social context analysis, institutional and professional accesses contributed to create the discourse that Indonesian democracy faced intolerant situation and was under the pressure from the hard-line Muslims. These result portrayed the lack of democracy in Indonesia covered by the Washington Post related to gubernatorial election, however the future research can conduct the research based on Presidential election for a broader scope.
