Abstract

The quality of milk is important to supply healthy milk for consumers. The increase of bacteria in the milk is one factor that can decrease the quality of milk. The purpose of this study was to determine contaminant levels of coliform and Escherichia coli in milk during transportation from dairy cows to milk bulk tank on dairy cooperative Suka Makmur,Grati. This study used random samples. Samples taken from four dairy farms in three stages: that were first stage from teat cows, the second stage from the milk cans, and the third stage from bulk tank of milk shelter. Tests were performed using the Most Probable Number (MPN). The results showed that the total coliform and Escherichia coli in milk during the transportation from dairy farmers to bulk tank of milk shelter has increased. Contaminant levels of coliform in milk during transportation were 5 colifrom/g milk from teat cows, 186 coliform/g milk from the milk cans, and 378 coliform/g milk from bulk tank. Contaminant levels of Escherechia coli in milk during transportation were 1 E. coli/g milk from teat cows, 44 E. coli/g milk from the milk cans, and 87 E.coli/g milk from bulk tank.
