Abstract

Japan as a game-making country always makes new innovations in creating games, one of them is social games. Although it’s free to play, social games is not completely free. To obtain characters, weapons, and items in those games players are required to do a fortune draw called gacha. Gacha requires points to draw so when those points are exhausted the players are then required to get it through doing some kind of in-game missions or getting it instantly which means buying paid content using real money. Currently one of the famous social games in Japan is Fate/Grand Order. The enthusiasm of the Fate/Grand Order players in getting their desired characters encouraged them to spend quite a lot of money. Not only that, most of Fate/Grand Order players are students who still don’t have job and regular income. This research aims to find out the behavior of Japanese student consumers in purchasing virtual items in game Fate/Grand Order. This research obtained data through a random sampling method by distributing questionnaires through social media. This research used Jean Baudrillard's hyperreality theory to find out whether players are trapped in a pseudo reality space in playing Fate/Grand Order. This research found that respondents spent quite a lot of money to get their desired characters, but each respondent had a subjective reason to do it.
