Abstract

Peripheral neuropathy is one of the long terms complication that affects about 50% of diabetic patients. Neuropathy attacks the nerves and causes diabetes mellitus clients to lose the protective sensation of the legs. Foot exercises can help reinforce blood circulation, especially in the lower extremities. The purpose of this research was to determine the foot exercise to sensory peripheral neuropathy on diabetes mellitus clients. Methods: This research used quasy experiment (pre-post test with control design). This research consists of 2 groups (intervention and control) with each respondent as many as 14 respondents selected by purposive sampling technique. This research lasted for 4 weeks. Instrument in this research was Semmes-Weinstein monofilament 10 g and diabetic foot exercise checklist. Data were analyzed by Wilcoxon signed rank test and Mann Whitney test with α ≤ 0.05. Results: The result of Wilcoxon signed rank test in the treatment group was 0.000 and in the control group was 0.564. The Mann Whitney test turned out a significant number on treatment and control groups at posttest of 0.039. Conclusions: This research shows the effect of diabetic foot exercises to sensory peripheral neuropathy. This intervention can be used as an alternative to improving the peripheral sensory neuropathy status both independent and in health services.
