Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease caused by genetic factors, due to the wrong diet, or unhealthy lifestyle. Knowledge is needed to improve diabetes self management to prevent acute complications and to decrease the risk of long term complications. Patients must have a fairly strict diet. This can lead to burnout and stress because they have to obey the recommended diet plan during their lifetime. Method: This study was aimed to understand the correlation between level of knowledge and self management diabetes with level of stress in dietary DM in Surabaya. This study was used a cross-sectional design. Participants were selected from five public health centers in Surabaya using the multistage sampling method. A total of 106 patient DM were recruited. Data were collected by questionnaire knowledge of diabetic diet, the self-management dietary, and the level of stress in dietary DM, and then analyzed using Rank Spearman test with <0,05 level of significant. Results: The results showed that level of knowledge has correlation to level of stress in dietary DM (p= 0,049) and self management diabetes has correlation to level of stress in dietary DM (p=0,000), which means self-management diabetes has a stronger relationship than level of knowledge to level of stress in dietary DM. Discussion: It has correlation between the level of knowledge and self management diabetes to level of stress in dietary DM in Surabaya. Further studies should involve larger respondents and better measurement tools to obtain more accurate results.
