Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) and Olive Oil on total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-concentration of rats fed with a hypercholesterolemic diet. There were twenty-four, three months old males hypercholesterolemic rats (Rattusnoroegicus) randomly assigned into three groups(PO,P1 and P2). PO(control) was given hyperchcilesterolemic diet without VCO and Olive Oil, Pl (hypercholesterolemic diet with VCO) and P2 (hyper cholesterolemic with Olive Oil). Rat fed with a Virgin Coconut Oil, Olive oil and control diet foreight weeks. After the feeding trial, serum total cholesterol, highdensity lipoprotein cholesterol were no significantly difference (p>0.05) thah control in Virgin Coconut Oil and Olive Oil. Incontrast, the Low density lipo protein cholesterol in Virgin Coconut Oil were significantly higher (p<0.05) than control and Olive Oil. The study suggest that the use of VCO and olive oil for eight weeks was not effective to improve lipo proteins componen tin blood rats afterfed with a hypercholesterolemic diet Keywords: VCO, olive oil, kolesterol-total, kolesterol-HDL, kolesterol-LDL
