Abstract

This study was aimed to analyze Drug Utilization Study (DUS) of antibiotic usage on astroenteritis pediatric patient at Department of Pediatric RSU Dr. Saiful Anwar, Malang from period 1st June to 31st December 2010. DUS includes the profile of antibiotic usage that consist of: drug name, route, doses, and the modus duration of antibiotic usage during hospitalization; and possibility of Drug Related Problem (DRPs). This study used retrospective data from Patient Medication Record and analyzed descriptively and the result was compared with textbook and guidelines. The result showed that antibiotic usage on gastroenteritis pediatric patient based on empirical routine use, with 53% from total sample had fecal microscopic examination. The common antibiotic used was ampicillin 250 mg IV tdd for 4 days. This is the drug of choice for E.coli infection that was the prominent pathogen in infectious intraabdominal. The other antibiotic used on gastroenteritis pediatric patient are gentamycin 50 mg IV tdd and metronidazole 100 mg PO tdd. There were combination of antibiotic that were used on gastroenteritis pediatric patient: ampicillin and gentamycin, also ampisulbactam and gentamycin. The dosage was generally appropriate for each patient. The possible DRPs were unnecessary drug therapy, wrong drug, dosage too low/too high and inappropriate compliance. Besides bacteria, infectious agents that usually causes gastroenteritis are virus and parasites. It is necessary to run another research to analyze DUS in this cases.
