Abstract

4-(4-methyl)benzoyloxy-3-methoxycinnamate acid was synthesized from ferulic acid and p-methylbenzoyl chloride through nucleophilic acyl substitution reaction. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of microwave power on yield percentage of the synthesis of these compound. This reaction was conducted by using oven microwave at 40, 200 and 400 Watt. The results showed that the yield percentage at 40 Watt for 10x30 seconds was 65.2% ± 3.4, and increased to 80.9% ± 8.2 at 200 Watt for 10x30 seconds. The largest yield percentage achieved at 200 Watt for 10x30 seconds. As for 400 Watt, the completion of reaction was reached at 2x30 seconds yielding 36.0% ± 9.7. If the reaction time was extended, the product would be degraded. The 1H-NMR spectra of the three separation methods (column chromatography, multilevel extraction and recrystallization) showed the impurity of the synthesized compound due to mixture of ferulic acid and p-methylbenzoic acid compounds. Development of the separation and purification method needs to obtain pure 4-(4- methyl)benzoyloxy-3-metoxicynamate acid compound.
