Abstract

People that feel ill will find ways to relieve their discomforts and rejuvenate their health. Self-medication is one action that most of people do to regain their health. There are two types of self-medication in general, patients that come to the counter with symptoms and the ones that come with medication requests. This study aims to know the profile of pharmacy consumers that involved in self-medication process in Western Surabaya that was divided to predisposition factors, enabling factors, reinforcing factors, selecting and using of drugs. Most of the respondents were 31-40 years old (32%) and male gender (58%). Majority educational level were high school/equivalent (51%) and worked as private employees (44%). The most symptom felt by consumers was influenza (14%), the first action to cure their symptoms were buying medicines at pharmacies (35%). Most reason to choose the pharmacy was due to close to home (50%). Most respondents considered the medicine they bought as not too expensive (55%). Source of drug information obtained mostly from doctors (31%). Most of the respondents reasons for choosing the medicine was effective (31%) and 84% of them mentioned the name (brand) of medicine when they asked to the pharmacy staffs. Most of respondents had been using medicines they were buying time before (76%) and generally they have known rules of drug use (90%). Mostly respondents considered only medicine name (79%) and expiration date of the medicine (63%). These data indicated that the active role of the pharmacist must be increased in order to get safe and rational self medication practice on self medication services.
