Abstract

Objectives: The study is aimed to determine the community pharmacist’s perception on generic medicines (GM) through the process of perception itself, introducing, choosing, and how to make opinion. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted by combining purposive sampling for selecting the community pharmacist. The sample size was 85 respondents from 625 community pharmacist who is practicing in Surabaya. A questionnaire survey was conducted from May to June 2012. Results: the result was categorized by each process of perception. From ‘Introducing’, majority of pharmacist known GM as named generic (INN), equal in quality, and low cost (28.2%). They got information about GM from reference book (30.6%). From ‘Choosing’, pharmacist were in favor of recommending GM (75.3%) and performing generic substitution (GS) to patient (61.2%). The majority reason to recommend GM and GS because GM is cheaper than the other (64.1% and 55.8%). From ‘Opinion’, they declared that the majority obstacle of recommending GM was brand-named prescription. On the other side, for personal therapy, they preferred choosing GM (72.9%) to other because of its low cost (53.2%). They also agreed to raise up generic utilization (95.3%) because it could help people for gaining a more rational treatment (53.1%). Conclusion: the majority of pharmacist have positive perception about GM. Most of them, choose GM for personal therapy, recommend GM to patient, and perform (provide) GS. To raise up Generic utilization in community, not only need positive perception from pharmacist, but also some obstacles such as high brand-name prescribing, community paradigm, skeptical thinking of some pharmacist, and insufficient GM in community pharmacy have to be solved.
