Abstract

A safe and effective medication for children require more attention than for adults. This study is to obtain the self-medication profile of pharmacy consumer to children. The profile includes predisposing, enabling, reinforcing factor, drug choosing, and drug using. Then a descriptive study using cross sectional design and 100 consumers in 30 pharmacy counters as respondents was conducted. The respondents were chosen by purposive sampling, the pharmacy counters were chosen by random sampling. The result showed that highest percentage of predisposing factors were customers whose age is 31-40 year old (44%), woman (71%), senior high school educated (52%), housewife (41%), cough and cold suffering (33%), doing self medication to relieve symptoms (32%), and using the medicine available in home as the first action (57%). Then, the highest percentage of enabling factors were the near distance of between pharmacy and home (53%) and cost medicine average (58%). While, the highest percentage of reinforcing factors was the source of information obtained from television (30%). The highest reason on choosing the drug product was the usual usage (33%) and asking drug by saying the product name (85%). Almost all respondents used the non-prescription drug in 2-3 days (50%) and also used over the counter drug class (45%). Next, the most interested information on drug box was the name of product (99%). Therefore, from the result it can be implied that the pharmacist should has the active role to give the good services for self medication. Furthermore, the government also has to give education about self care to society.
