Abstract

Contaminated surgical instruments is one of the factor that caused nosocomial infection namely surgical site infection, therefore sterility assurance for surgical instruments should be increased. Sterility assurance is obtained by decreasing bioburden on surgical instrument, that can be done by decontamination process. Decontamination can be done by soaking surgical instruments in 0,5% chlorine solution at a certain time. This study was aimed to find out the effect of surgical instrument soaking time by chlorine 0,5% towards microbes number on decontamination process at CSSD Dr. Soetomo and to determine optimum soaking time that decreased microbes number maximally. Counting microbes number procedure refers to the Indonesia Pharmacopeia IV by plate count method then incubated at 35 ± 2 0C for 24 – 48 hours. Sampling method that being used in this study is swabbing. The number of taken sample was 4 clamp, 3 clamps was soaked in chlorine solution 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 15 minutes, while another 1 clamp wasn’t soaked. Medium used was plate count agar. Replication was conducted 2 times. The control for sample testing were medium fertility test, medium sterility test, homogenizer solution sterility test, cotton swab sterility swab, rinse fluid sterility test and LAFC effectivity test. The result was, soaking time by chlorine 0,5% effect microbes number on decontamination process. Microbes number had been decreased significantly after soaking for 5 – 15 minutes. Based on the result, concluded that soaking surgical instrument in 0,5% chlorine solution for 5 – 15 minutes effective to decrease .
