Abstract

Piroxicam is usually given by per or al as nonsteroid antiinflamation drug (NSAID) for treatment of arthritis rheumatoid symptoms and acute and chronic osteoarthritis. In geriatric patients, inco mpliance often occur in medication with tablet because the decrease of ability in swallowing tablets. This problem could be solved with oral dosage form which can disintegrate rapidly and dissolve in mouth in 30 seconds or less namely Orally Disintegrating Tablet (ODT). In this study Freeze drying method was used for producing ODT. This study aims to determine the characterization of piroxicam ODT usi ng CMC Ca as superdisintegran, gelatin as thickening agent and manitol as base made by freeze drying method. This characterization were determined by using Diferrential Thermal Analyzer (DTA), X-ray Diffractometry (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The characterization was done for single compound, physical mixture, and freeze dryed ODT. DTA’s study showed that there was decrease of piroxicam melting point and enthalpy in physical mixture and freeze dryed ODT. XRD’s study demonstrated that there was significant decrease of piroxicam’s intensity in physical mixture and freeze dryed ODT compared to single compound, but there was no significant decerase between physical mixture and freeze dryed ODT. The characterization using SEM showed that the tablets were porous.
