Abstract

Euphemism in media is used to avoid unpleasant words. Words themselves have great force and may cause different reactions on one individual to another. In the news, the use of euphemism makes the words more comfortable to be accepted by society. Media journalists also use euphemism to make their news looks more appealing while providing facts and analysis. This research investigates the types of euphemism formation and the functions of euphemism in news articles of the New York Times online newspaper in the World section. More specifically, this study focuses on one event, namely 'US-North Korea Summit' and focuses only on one actor, Donald Trump. The limitation used in this study is the D-days of the summit, 12 June 2018, and 28 February 2019, as the publication date of the news articles to make the focus of analysis only on the euphemism used on the summit. The analysis in this study conducted using theory from Allan (2012), types of euphemism formation, and Burridge's (2012) functions of euphemism theory. The findings show that the journalists of the New York Times online newspaper used several types of euphemism formation in describing the US-North Korea Summit and Trump in their news. Those types are verbal play, substitution, taste-based, and upgrades, downgrades, deceptions, and obfuscations. The functions of the euphemism found are the underhand, provocative, and uplifting euphemism functions.
