Abstract

The focus of this investigation is to get physical characterization of cocrystal carbamazepine-nicotinamide (1:1) that were prepared by solvent evaporation and rapid cooling method. They were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy show a result on cocrystal infrared spectrum which there is a shift in the N-H and C=O area at 3447 cm-1; 3391 cm-1 and 1685 cm-1; 1660 cm-1. Powder X-ray diffraction also show a result on cocrystal difractogram that there is a new 2oθ angle at 6,65o; 8,90o; 10,19o for rapid cooling cocrystal and 6,66o; 8,77o; 10,15ofor solvent evaporation cocrystal. Differential thermal analysis give a result that cocrystal has a lower melting point than carbamazepin which it showed on the termogram that the melting point of rapid cooling cocrystal is 155,5oC and solvent evaporation cocrystal is 153,7oC. We can see the difference of rapid cooling cocrystal and solvent evaporation cocrystal is on the morphology and the particle size by scanning electron microscopy.
