Abstract

Phonological awareness has an important role in children's literacy, especially in writing. Some researchers conducted research on the relationship between phonological awareness and writing in children, but researchers have not found any research on phonological awareness tasks in first grade children, especially in Indonesian children. This study aims to identify how is current phonological awareness in writing showed by the first graders of two elementary schools in Surabaya. This study identified phonological awareness in writing among 48 first-grade students in Surabaya through phonological awareness tasks in Indonesian. This study uses a qualitative method with two phonological awareness tasks, namely the identification of grapheme and phonemes and word identification. This research uses the main theory from Melzi dan Schick(2013) about Language and Literacy Development in the School Years and Phonological Awareness. Writing System and Spelling Development by Treiman dan Kessler(2005), Phonological Awareness by Torgesen dan Mathes (1999) and Adams, et al.(1998), Indonesian Vowel and Consonant Phonemes by H. D. Alwi(1998), and Indonesian Graphs and Graphemes are used to identify and interpret participant’s responses to phonological awareness tasks. The results of this study revealed that overall the phonological awareness tasks in writing, most of the participants answered with the incorrect answers with a percentage of 60.2% in the task of grapheme-phoneme identification. From these results it can be concluded that most of the first grade students of the elementary school did not have a good development in the awareness of graphemes and phonemes when writing.
