Abstract

Magazine cover is constructed by textual and visual elements. It employs not only the edition main topic discussion but also implies author’s idea. Tempo magazine is an Indonesian media within political genre that its covers mostly features faces of politicians. The aim of this research paper is to analyze the visual grammar of a politician figure Joko Widodo in magazine covers of Tempo magazine during the campaign session of Pemilu 2019. The research focuses on eight magazine covers collected during the campaign session of Pemilu 2019 (September 22nd 2018 until April 13th 2019) produced by Tempo magazine. The intention of this study is to observe how Tempo portrays the figure of Jokowi in their magazine covers during the Pemilu 2019 campaign session. The visual grammar by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006) is being the main tool to be applied in the analysis of this study. This study reveals that Tempo mostly employs narrative representations of ideational level in their covers which makes the figure of Jokowi is close and easily related to viewer. Moreover, in interactional level, Tempo tries to establish neutral status between Jokowi and viewer through offer gaze, medium camera distance and eye level vertical angle. Lastly, in textual level, Tempo style in delivering information is topbottom formation which means abstract-real information arrangement. In the syntactic form of the textual element, Tempo likes to use simple and memorable noun phrases as the headlines. The headlines are followed with sentences that started with some introductory phrase to briefly deliver their topic. Some of the taglines are finished with open-ended questions to make the viewer learn more about the edition topic.
