Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pattern of hero’s journey and the identity issue in the novel The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan. Archetypal approach is considered to be suitable in analyzing this novel, especially the theory proposed by Joseph Campbell. The method used in this study is qualitative-interpretative method and the data was collected by close-reading. The results show that this novel follows the same pattern of hero’s journey according to Campbell’s archetypal pattern. The results also show that there is a significant problem of identity crisis in the novel, which is then also analyzed by the writer using the identity theory of Richard Jenkins. The writer found that the crisis of identity in the novel is related to the transformation of teenager into an adult that is oppressed by the expectations of society. The main characters then transform themselves to be a ‘better person’ by accepting who they are and proving themselves to be someone who could be better than who they are identified as.
