Abstract

Background: Cataract is eye lens opacification which prevents clear vision. Cataract is the most common cause of blindness and vision impairment worldwide, including Indonesia. Cataract can affects children which is also a leading cause of childhood blindness. The main treatment of pediatric cataract is surgery. However, there is still a risk of complications associated with this surgery and the most serious one is glaucoma that caused by high intraocular pressure. Objective: This study aimed to determine the differences of intraocular pressure pre and post pediatric cataract surgeries in RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya from January 2017 until August 2019. Method: This study used an observational analytic method with cross-sectional approach that took secondary data from patient’s medical records. Researchers took data of patient’s age at surgery, gender, pre-operative IOP, post-operative IOP, and intraocular lens implantation. The data were tested for normality using Saphiro-Wilk test because the amount of data < 50 samples. Saphiro-Wilk test results showed that the data were normally distributed (p=0,628) so the data processing were continued using paired sample t-test with a 95% confidence interval. Result: There were 32 eye samples from 16 pediatric cataract surgery patients. Overall the mean of pre-operative IOP was 13,05 mmHg and the mean of post-operative IOP was 13,36 mmHg. After comparison, there was an increase in IOP post-operative with an average increase of 0,31 mmHg. The result of the analysis is there was no significant difference between IOP pre and post pediatric cataract surgeries (p=0,711). Conclusion: There was no difference between intraocular pressure pre and post pediatric cataract surgeries in RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya from January 2017 - August 2019
