Abstract

Nowadays, the demand for aesthetic aspects of dentistry is higher. Aesthetic of dentistry is not only centered on white teeth but also involve the appearance of the gingival color. Gingival hyperpigmentation is caused by exogenous and endogenous factors. Therefore, they can increase melanin deposition. One of the treatments for the gingival hyperpigmentation is depigmentation procedure. The purpose of this case report is to learn the management of depigmentation procedure using Kirkland knife. A 19-years old female patient came to Airlangga University Hospital. She complained about her black colored gum that affected to her smiles. The patient confessed she did not smoke, she did not have a systemic disease and she did not take medication. Depigmentation was done on the anterior maxillary gingiva with a Kirkland knife, and for interdental parts using an Orban knife and then irrigated using a sterile saline solution. After that, the application of periodontal pack on the operation area. The patient was evaluated at 7 days after surgery and 21 days after surgery. The result after depigmentation was good. There were no complaints of pain, and infection was not reported.
