Abstract

Sargassum sp has been abudantly available in the Indonesia territorial. As brown algae, Sargassum has been used for many medical usage. One of important material in dentistry is impression material. All this time the availability of impression material in dentistry is from imported material. The research of impression material based on natrium alginate from Sargassum sp. has been done before but some of physical and mechanical characteristics are still not optimum. The impression material is still brittle although it has been successfully in accuration of detail and setting time. This aim of this research is to increase the mechanical and physical characteristics by adding Magnesium Oxide to gain the best characteristics of impression material for dentistry application. We use variation composition of magnesium oxide weight which are 6%, 7%, 8%, 9%, and 10%. Sample preparation is done by mixing natrium alginate powder from Sargassum sp extraction with otherr constituent materials and addition of magnesium oxide. The setting time test was performed by mixing the powder of impression material with 250 μL of distilled water and then counted setting time. The best result of setting time was 4 minutes 17seconds with the addition of magnesium oxide percent age by 7%. We did also the tear strength, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and MTT Assay. All of tear strength values are in the range of standardized value corresponding to American National Standard Institute/American Dental Association (ANSI /ADA) between 400 J/m2 – 500 J/m2. SEM profile has been showed non uniform particle size distribution and the existence of porous. XRD result has been showed the presence of lower interlayer distance of main diffraction peak which associated to the well distributed of non uniform powder size. The dental impression material is not toxic related to the cell viability values greater than 60%.
