Abstract

Background. The frequency of oral candidiasis was significantly higher in children who suffer from cancer compared with children without it. Induced ulcerative oral lesions have a tendency to increase the risk of local infection that can spread to systemic and life threatening and Candida tropicalis is a species can cause it. Herbal medicine, like salam leaf. now is considered widely as an alternative treatment because an increased resistance of antifungal agent and because of its phytochemicals compound. Purpose. The aim of this study was to examine MIC and MFC of salam leaf extract against Candida tropicalis from children in cancer therapy. Method. Candida tropicalis sample taken from the dorsum of the tongue swab of children in cancer therapy. Salam leaf extract was diluted in different concentration. Inoculum was added to each extract and then incubated. After 24 hours, each extract-inoculum suspension planted on SDA which is divided into 10 sections with streaking techniques and incubated. Three extact-inoculum suspension concentration is estimated as the MIC and MFC planted again on the SDA. After incubated, colonies were counted. Results. There was not any growth of Candida tropicalis colony on concentration 12,5% salam leaf extract on SDA, while a visible growth of Candida tropicalis colonies on concentration 6,25% salam leaf extract. Conclusion. It was showed that salam leaf extract has antifungal effect against the colony growth of Candida tropicalis from children in cancer therapy with MIC 6,25% and MFC 12,5%.
