Abstract
It is undeniable that as the dog gets older, their body systems may increase susceptibility to disease. Understanding of longevity represents a significant opportunity for geriatric dogs to have a longer lifespan. Every dog breeds experienced a different lifespan based on the category of their body weight. Smaller dogs have a longer lifespan than the larger dogs. Despite the differences, applying excellent management health care and proper nutrition is a major key for dogs to live a longer life. The aim of this study was to find out the prevalence of domesticated canine geriatric based on age, sex, and breed, as well as to determine the prevalence of their disease in Surabaya from May-June 2020. The design of this study was an observational study with a cross-sectional method and the samples were taken primarily from dog owners in Surabaya by using stratified random sampling. The results showed that the prevalence of domesticated canine geriatric in Surabaya from May-June 2020 was 30.06%. From 336 collected samples, the oldest recorded age for a dog was 15 years. The sex distribution of geriatric dogs were male 16.96% and bitch 13.1%. The most canine geriatric health problem was skin diseases with 28.01% of cases. Following gastrointestinal disease, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal diseases, urinary diseases, respiratory diseases, genito-reproductive diseases, ophthalmic diseases, and ear diseases. And the highest risk of the disease that can occur in domesticated geriatric dogs were ophthalmic disease, ear disease, and genito-reproductive disease. This findings highlight how high the prevalence of diseases that can affect geriatric dogs. Thus, taking out dogs at an early age to veterinarians can prevent serious disease.
