Abstract

Not Safe for Works can be considered as a phenomenon that may occur in subtitle displayed on the movie. According to Heinzman (2019) NSFW is word related to pornography, offensive, and insult. The study analyzes the way NSFW words in a movie subtitled in Television broadcast and DVD Blu-ray. Also, this study reveals factors causing the difference of censorship of NSFW words subtitles between Television broadcast and DVD Blu-ray. The theory used by the writer to analyzes is Skopos Theory by Vermeer (1978). The theory discussed that the purpose or Skopos of overall translation action act as the fundamental principle for any translation process. The movie used as the object of the study is a gangster and crime movie entitled John Wick (2014). The study uses qualitative approach in analyzing the topic. The data used by the writer is the original script and the Indonesian subtitle of Television broadcast and DVD Blu-ray of John Wick movie. The result shows that from 48 NSFW words in the original, there are 32 NSFW words censored in television broadcast, and 26 NSFW words censored in DVD Blu-ray. From the data, the result of the analysis indicates word related to sexual, sadism, violence, and discredit human being are censored in Television broadcast and DVD Blu-ray. In accordance to Skopos theory, the different target audience and the different regulation for television broadcast and DVD-Blu-ray manifested in two different ways of censorship which are audiovisual censorship in form of (mute) censor as well as omission.
