Abstract
Communication between pilots and engineers tends to have their own language variation. This present study aims to identify the linguistic features of the register used between pilots and engineers, and to describe how the linguistic features are used in the context by using the framework of the register proposed by Holmes. Qualitative approach is used in this study. The data were collected in a form of transcriptions of the conversations between ten pilots and ten engineers in two working days. From data analysis the writer found three features of the register which are vocabulary, morphology, and syntactic features. The theories applied in examining the data are Holmes‟s theory (2013), Carstairs-McCarthy‟s theory (2002) for the vocabulary, and Lieber‟s theory (2009) for morphological features and Radford‟s theory(2006)for the syntactical features. The results of the study show that there are 35 specific vocabularies and the most appeared morphology features in this register are are initialism and then followed by compounding and phrases, acronym, and affixation. While in the syntactical features, the truncation of null subject, reduction of verb be, and auxiliary be are found in the data. Those linguistic features exist to ease the flow of communication. The use of their own vocabulary, morphological, and syntactical features could make the process of communication become efficient, simple, and easy to be understood by pilots and engineers.
