Abstract

Politeness strategies is an important concept in a communication. By applying politeness strategies, it shows that the speaker respects the hearer. Politeness strategies also important to be applied in a conversation on podcast video that discuss about motivation. This study aims to identify the politeness strategies used by Jay Shetty on his On Purpose Podcast video entitled; Khloe Kardashian: On The Importance Of Putting Yourself First & Making Kindness The New Norm. This study focuses on the types of politeness strategies used by Shetty and the factors which influence him in choosing such strategies. This study is descriptive qualitative. The data were analyzed by using the theory of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). The finding of the data analysis shows that Shetty applies the four types of politeness strategies, those are bald on record (14,4%); positive politeness (71,2%); negative politeness (13,6%); and off record (0,8%). The factors which influence him in choosing the strategies are Shetty awares about the advantages in using each strategies and he also awares about the distance, power, and the rank of imposition.
