Abstract
African Americans are still being stereotyped as criminals nowadays. They are shaped by white supremacy. Black textuality, a cultural product which is written by African Americans, is a medium that is used for expressing their experiences in a racist society. Kendrick Lamar‘s DNA. (2017) and HUMBLE. (2017) music videos represent the need for African Americans to change themselves before they could fight for racial justice as human nature‘s duality is symbolized within them. This study uses a qualitative approach. The data are taken from the artist‘s Youtube channel. DNA. (2017) portrays an African American as a hostage of crime which he is being ready for a verdict to death. HUMBLE. (2017) shows mixed shots of African Americans with urban and religious imageries, with no plot in the music video. The two music videos feature African Americans as the majorities and white people as minorities with their role as cameos. This study aims to examine the quality of being an African American under white supremacy. To archive this goal, the researcher uses a semiotic approach, using John Fiske‘s ‗Television Culture‘. The signs, which are the data, are collected by capturing the scenes and transcribing the lyrics. By doing this, this study is expected to reveal African Americans‘ demand for their racial-ethnic identity based on the represented emotions.
