Abstract
Slip of the ear is an error experienced by a listener while perceiving other people‘s speech. The current study intends to investigate the types and the most dominant type of slip of the ear that happened within noisy situations by using Bond‘s theory of classification of slips of the ear (2005). 42 children aged 4-6 years old were chosen as the participants of this study. They were given a listening task consisting of six utterances and then asked to repeat what they had had heard. The results showed that there were 129 incorrect repetitions which were then categorised into 11 types of slip of the ear, including consonant misperception, segment order, phonological reduction, language varieties, nonwords, content and function words, morphological misperception, well-formed and ill-formed, argument structure and function, constituents and semantical misperception. The most dominant type that occured was content and function word misperception with the precentage of 29.56% of the data frequency. From the results, it could be inferred that slips of the ear occured under noisy situations were expereinced by children who tended to misperceive words based on the use of their linguistic knowledge. Children seemed to be likely to perceive words that were more familiar to them due to their lack of vocabularies.
