Abstract

Inventory data of individual mangroves were collected in January 2019 from mangrove forests of Nguling, Pasuruan Regency and Tongas, Probolinggo regency, East Java, Indonesia. The study aimed to determine the structure and the biomass of mangrove ecosystems. A total 15 plots with a size of 100 m2 was established perpendicular to the coastline using a non-destructive quadrant sampling technique in order to identify and measure the diameter breast height (DBH) of mangrove stands. Sampling of soils was carried out at depth intervals of 0-10 cm, 10-25 cm, and 25-50 cm using a modified stainless steel auger with a diameter of 6.5 cm. There were 383 individual trees of four true mangrove species observed in the research areas, namely: Avicennia alba, Avicennia marina, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata with a total density of 2553 mangroves ha-1. The genus Rhizophora constituted 93 of total individual mangroves; therefore, it dominated the important value index (IVI). Furthermore, the average biomass and C-stocks of mangrove stands were 482.09±159.57 MgB ha-1 and 226.58±75 MgC ha-1 respectively. Meanwhile, the mangrove soils stored 314.27±24.91 MgC ha-1, in which on average, soil C-stocks constituted 58 of total C-stocks of mangrove ecosystems in the whole research areas. © EM International.
