Abstract

Background: One of the important components of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning is the evaluation of the patient’s soft tissue profile. Soft tissue profile of the face may change as a result of orthodontic and orthognathic treatment. The analysis of the soft tissue facial profile from photographic records provides information on the morphology of the profile and its relationship with the underlying dentoskeletal tissues. Objective: The purpose of this study was to obtain objective average measurements of the soft tissue facial profile to use them as a guide for aesthetic treatment goals. Methods: A random sample of 65 Java Childrens (ages 6 - 12 years) with Dental Class I was obtained. The photographs were taken in the natural head position (NHP). The anatomic points were recorded and three of the angles that characterize a harmonious profile were measured: the nasolabial angle (Cm-Sn-Ls), the mentolabial angle (Li-Sm-Pg), and the facial angle (G-Sn-Pg). Result: The values obtained for the two sexes were compared using the t-student test. All angles had values that were larger for females. (nasolabial angle: females 98.6o, males 98.11o, p = 0.814; mentolabial angle: females 129.2o, males 127,71o, p = 0.554; facial angle: females 172,2o, males 170,8o degrees, p = 0.209). Conclusion: Differences between the two sexes were obtained, all angles were not significant larger in females
