Abstract

Speech such as political speech aims to inform and persuade the audience. Barack Hussein Obama, the former president of the United States, is great at delivering a political speech. He constructed his speech by using cohesive devices that consists of grammatical and lexical cohesion to obtain the unity of information delivered to the audience. Thus, the study was conducted to discover the most frequently used cohesion in Obama’s speech. The study applied the theory of grammatical lexical cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976) and the theory of lexical cohesion proposed by Renkema (2004) to analyze the data. Moreover, it also used a qualitative approach since the study involves analyzing, describing, and interpreting the data. The finding of the study revealed that the most frequently used cohesion was personal reference and repetition. Personal reference was used to obtain Obama’s purposes in delivering his speech such as giving a sense of togetherness and shared responsibility. Repetition was used to emphasize Obama’s idea thus the audience could remember and understand his ideas.
