Abstract

The purpose of the study was to review the profile of antibiotic cephalosporin’s prescription at Farmasi Airlangga Pharmacy in Surabaya. A retrospective study was conducted. Data collected was cephalosporin’s prescription from January to December 2013. From the study, 77 prescriptions were obtained. The first generation of cephalosporin - cefadroxil was commonly prescribed (53,25%), followed by third generation - cefixime (46,75%). The dosage regiment for cefadroxil was 500 mg two times daily (2dd1) meanwhile cefixime was 100 mg two times daily (2dd1). From the study, 75% (n=27) of cefixime and 48,78% (n=20) cefadroxil has met the appropriate frequency. Besides that the length of treatment has met the proper criteria as written in standard books. However the direction to be taken with or without food still have not met the requirement as indicated in the guidelines. There were 68 prescriptions with compelling therapy, which nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) was the common drugs being prescribed along with cephalosporin (n=27) followed by corticosteroid (n=20), antihistamine (n=20) and non opiod analgesic (n=20). For the potential interaction, only 2 prescriptions were obtained which contains attapulgit and Smecta®. These medicines interact with other drugs and reduce their absorption. There was high percentage of cephalosporin prescribed by generic name which is 63,64% (n=49) and this shown that doctors been complied to the government proposition. From this study, it can be concluded that attention and additional information should be given by pharmacists mainly related to direction for use/intake of cephalosporin.
