Abstract
Diarrhea is a disease that commonly occurs in Indonesia. One of diarrhea type is the specific one which is caused by bacterial infection. For the treatment, adsorbents - antibiotic combinations are usually given. Adsorbents, e. g. activated carbon and attapulgite, are used to adsorb toxins and antibiotics are given to overcome the bacterial growth. Adsorbents nonspecifically adsorb not only toxins but also nutritions, water or even drugs so antibiotics are also possibly adsorbed and it can affect the treatment effectivity. The purpose of this study is to know the adsorption capacity of activated carbon and attapulgite against ciprofloxacin HCl and ofloxacin, then compare it. Determination of antibiotics level is performed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry with maximum wavelength 273 for ciprofloxacin HCl and 287 for ofloxacin. Results can be concluded by obtain adsorption percentage and k values of each antibiotic - adsorbent. Activated carbon - ciprofloxacin HCl’s k = 19,543; % = 22,58; attapulgite - ciprofloxacin HCl’s k = 0,096; % = 14,40; activated carbon - ofloxacin’s k = 51,286; % = 23,80; attapulgite – ofloxacin’s k = 7,328; % = 15,64. The result shows that adsorption capacity of activated carbon - ofloxacin is greater than activated carbon - ciprofloxacin HCl, meanwhile attapulgite - ofloxacin is greater than attapulgite - ciprofloxacin HCl. Adsorption capacity of activated carbon - ofloxacin is greater than the of attapulgite - ofloxacin, meanwhile activated carbon - ciprofloxacin HCl is greater than the attapulgite - ciprofloxacin HCl. It can be concluded that at various concentrations, activated carbon and attapulgite can adsorb ciprofloxacin HCl and ofloxacin so these two have to be given with the time interval separately.
