Abstract

Introduction : The high stigma in society towards PWMD does not only affect the family and PWMD itself but on the pattern of care and care for PWMD. Families tend to isolate PWMD so that they do not interact with the community, for example by shackling them, hiding them in the house and not even being taken to the appropriate health service. This has led to various perceptions in the community about how to care for PWMD. The purpose of this research is to describe in depth the perceptions of the community around the halfway house about the care of mental disorders patients. Methods : This study used a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach with ten participants. The technique of taking participants was purposive sampling. Retrieval of data on ten participants with in-depth interviews and field notes were then analyzed using the Colaizzi method. Results : In this research, 8 themes were identified namely 5 themes (community understanding of mental disorder, community stigma, community response, community expectation and community experience with PWMD) for the first specific purpose and 3 themes (treatment, forms of care for PWMD and carer or nurse factors) for the second specific purpose. Discussion : Public perception is influenced by several factors including the factor of maintaining distance from PWMD because they think PWMD is dangerous, tolerance and support because they think that PWMD care is just useless, social limitation factors that consider PWMD not worthy of responsibility and factors of prejudice and misunderstanding. Public perceptions will have an impact on family acceptance and PWMD itself both negative perceptions (stigma) and positive perceptions (support and acceptance).
