Abstract

News contains implicit portrayal of stereotype and social issues through the use of communication and language. One of the credible newspapers in the world is TheGuardian. This study investigates the articles regarding coronavirus outbreak published by TheGuardian online newspaper. The articles published on January 2020, it covered the news about what happened in the west about racism caused by the coronavirus pandemic outbreak. Theory of Cohesion by Halliday and Hasan (1976) is applied to find out the items of cohesive devices which appeared in the articles. Theory of Halliday and Hasan (1976) is applied to identify the use of cohesive devices, especially for the grammatical cohesion and supported with theory by Rankema’s (2004) for the lexical cohesion. The data of this study is the articles which are taken from TheGuardian official website www.theguardian.com. These are the results of this study (1) the type of grammatical cohesion which is mostly used in the articles is demonstrative references that appeared 211 (41.05%) times in the article with the word the which indicates that the writer shows neutrality in the news (2) the type of lexical cohesion mostly used is reiteration that appeared 53 times in the articles with the subtype of synonymy that appeared 19 (35.85%) times in the article with the word racism or prejudice which the writer wanted to state out what happens in the society because of the coronavirus pandemic outbreak.
