Abstract

Nowadays, the automatic translation feature is widely used in various applications, one of which is Instant Messaging application. However, there are often errors in translation by machine translations used in applications. Therefore, this study aims to identifying translation errors in the automatic translation feature in GrabChat. Machine translation used in the automatic translation feature on GrabChat is Google Translate. The source of data was two GrabChat accounts. The data for this study were 64 text messages from Indonesian to English gathered from June - October 2020. A qualitative approach was embodied to analyze the data that were identified by using the error classification by Vilar et al. (2006). From 64 data are gathered, there are 131 errors identified. The study found that there are ten types of errors found. While the most prominent types of translation error in GrabChat is unknown stem which constitutes 44% of all errors. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that Google Translate in GrabChat has lexical problems to semantic problem that causes translation errors.
